Corpus Christi" Baroque Crucifix Carved in Wood and Oil Painted

The "Corpus Christi" crucifix from Val Gardena presents a finely carved figure of Jesus with precise anatomical detail, conveying abandonment and suffering. Polychromy is executed in traditional oil paint, giving the skin a pale, realistic tone contrasted with bright red wounds.

The Baroque-style cross is dark-stained wood with trilobed ends edged by a thin frame of polished gold or brass. The perizoma (loincloth) is finished in gold leaf to create a voluminous, lustrous drapery that emphasises Christ's dignity.

For fidelity and durability, pieces up to 56 cm are carved in maple; larger sizes are in linden. Each crucifix is hand-finished by artisans, suitable for private devotion or a place of worship.
